Discussion about "Rapid" E-Learning Development software and how to choose the right tool:
- Agreed that most programs are similar in terms of functionality
- Liked tools (like Articulate) that allow user to begin with PowerPoint slides (more efficient if we have something to start with)
- In addition to Articulate, others had experience using Lectora and Captivate
- Agreed that it's typically not a good idea to allow SME to simply "dump" their content and information into the software
- Need the support and expertise of the Instructional Designer (ID) to add the methodology to ensure the integrity of the learning experience
- "Bad" content/design (on paper, in Powerpoint, or in the classroom) is still "bad" content when you put in online
- That is one of the reasons e-learning software does not mean the demise of the Instructional Designer
SME's objective for training is not always aligned with those of the ID
- SME wants "full" competency
- ID's goal is "working" competency
ID/Training and Development (T&D) professionals need the buy-in and support of IT in order for blended learning to be successful in an organization
-
Important to involve IT in the planning phase, not just the 'execution" or "implementation" phase
-
T&D should "own" the initiative, with IT as a critical partner
Discussed "training" versus "learning"
-
Need to expand and clarify the definition of both
-
Organizations need to shift their way of thinking from "trainer" being responsible for the learning to the "learner" being responsible for the learning
-
Requires accountability on the part of the learners and their direct managers to make this happen
